Hemp Houses & Hempcrete Construction
A museum-quality primer on the residential building system quietly rewriting what a wall can do. How a hemp house is actually built, how it performs, what it costs, and where it is legal today.

What a hemp house actually is
A hemp house is a residential building whose walls are cast from hempcrete — a bio-composite of hemp hurd (the woody core of the industrial hemp stalk), a lime-based binder, and water. Hempcrete is not structural. It is packed around a load-bearing timber, steel, or CLT frame to create a monolithic, breathable, insulating wall in one continuous pour.
The result is a wall assembly that behaves less like insulation plus sheathing plus air barrier plus vapor retarder — and more like a single living material that regulates temperature, humidity, sound, and fire in one layer.
How a hemp house goes together
- 1. Foundation. A conventional insulated slab or stem wall, kept dry — hempcrete needs a capillary break so it doesn't wick ground moisture.
- 2. Structural frame. Typically a double-stud timber frame or post-and-beam sized to sit inside the wall cavity. The hempcrete wraps the studs on both faces.
- 3. Formwork. Removable panels are set to the wall's finished thickness (usually 10–14 inches).
- 4. Mixing and casting. Hurd, binder, and water are mixed on site and either tamped by hand in lifts or spray-applied with a pneumatic gun. Spray-applied crews can cast a whole house in days rather than weeks.
- 5. Cure. The wall is left to breathe for two to eight weeks depending on climate. The lime slowly carbonates, locking CO₂ back into the wall as it hardens.
- 6. Finish. Lime plaster inside and out. No vapor barrier, no housewrap — the wall's job is to stay vapor-open so it can dry in both directions.
R-value, thermal mass, and comfort
Hempcrete tests at roughly R-2.0 to R-2.5 per inch. A 12-inch monolithic wall lands near R-24 to R-30 — competitive with a well-built 2×6 stick wall, but with three properties a stick wall does not have:
- Thermal mass. Hempcrete stores and releases heat slowly. Interior temperatures swing less across the day, which lowers peak heating and cooling loads beyond what the nominal R-value predicts.
- Airtightness in one layer. A properly cast monolithic wall has no stud-cavity air paths and no seams to tape. Blower-door numbers in the 0.6–1.5 ACH50 range are routine.
- Hygric buffering. The wall absorbs and releases moisture, keeping interior humidity in the comfort band without a mechanical dehumidifier.
What a hemp house costs to build
In the current U.S. market, hempcrete wall assemblies commonly land in the $40–$60 per square foot of wall range installed, depending on binder cost, whether the crew casts by hand or sprays, and regional hurd availability. On a whole house, that typically translates to a 5–15% premium over conventional stick framing before you subtract the line items hempcrete replaces — insulation, housewrap, vapor retarder, and often interior drywall.
Costs fall fast at scale. Every regional hurd processor and every spray-trained crew brings the delta closer to zero. Several U.S. builders are already delivering hempcrete envelopes at parity with high-performance conventional walls.
Residential building codes and permits
Hempcrete was added as Appendix BA of the 2024 International Residential Code (IRC), giving U.S. building officials a prescriptive path for one- and two-family dwellings for the first time. In jurisdictions that have not yet adopted the 2024 IRC, hempcrete can still be permitted through the code's alternative means and methods provision, and hundreds of homes have already been built this way across North America and Europe.
Practical checklist before you break ground:
- · Confirm your jurisdiction's IRC edition.
- · Bring the plans examiner Appendix BA early.
- · Engage a hempcrete-experienced structural engineer for the frame.
- · Line up a regional hurd supplier and binder vendor before framing starts.
Fire, mold, pests, and sound
- Fire. The lime binder encases each hurd particle. Tested assemblies routinely achieve two-hour fire ratings — hempcrete does not flash over the way a stud cavity does.
- Mold. Lime raises the wall's pH above the range mold needs to colonize. Combined with vapor-open drying, this makes hempcrete walls exceptionally mold-resistant.
- Pests. Termites and rodents get no nutrition from a lime-bound hurd matrix and do not nest in it.
- Sound. The porous structure and mass together deliver acoustic performance that stick walls need multiple added layers to match.
Finding hempcrete near you
Two materials must be sourced separately: hemp hurd (the aggregate) and a compatible lime binder. North American hurd supply has expanded rapidly since the 2018 Farm Bill and now includes processors in the Midwest, the Northeast, the Southeast, and the Pacific Northwest.
